LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Legislature has given first round approval to a redistricting bill that would set the new boundaries of the state's congressional districts.
The bill was approved on a 38-10 vote.
State Senator Lou Ann Linehan, chair of the redistricting committee, said the approved, revised map keeps Douglas County intact in the Second District. She said the district also includes Saunders County and part of Sarpy County.
Linehan said the First District map includes Lancaster, Madison and Platte counties, among others.
State Senator Justin Wayne expressed his opposition to the map since it does not keep all of Sarpy County inside one district.
"I don’t necessarily like and agree with what the congressional maps are.," he said. "But I understand where we are and what is going on. I am not saying what is going on is some kind of shady, secret thing, but we’ll see the votes and we’ll move forward.”
The Unicameral will take the weekend off, with a recess day scheduled for Monday. Session will resume Tuesday, with final approval votes scheduled for Thursday.
